EasyOS 1.0.2 64-bit on Raspberry Pi

Another build for the Pi3! EasyOS 0.9.6.3 64-bit for the Pi3 was released in September 2018:

http://bkhome.org/news/201809/easyos-0963-64-bit-on-raspberry-pi.html

So, what is different? EasyOS has been undergoing rapid development, huge improvements since 0.9.6.3. Read about the 1.0 release for the PC, to get an idea what has been happening:

http://bkhome.org/news/201901/easyos-version-10-released.html

Version 1.0.x is still the 'Pyro' series, compiled in oe-qky-src. There are some new applications included, compared with 0.9.6.3, such as Symphytum (simple database manager) and Scribus (desktop publisher). LibreOffice on the Pi was crashing, so I have recompiled it, now OK.

There is still no hardware acceleration, so some things, such as YouTube videos in SeaMonkey browser, do not play well. It would be possible to add-on a hardware-accelerated media player, which could be a project for someone -- see the 'sfsget' icon at top of screen to download the 'devx' SFS mega-package, that will turn your EasyOS into a complete compile environment.

I have only tested on my Pi3 Model B (v1.2, 2015), and I don't know if the firmware is updated enough for the later model. Don't know about the earlier Pi3 either. Feedback welcome.

You will see in the 1.0 announcement for the PC, that international versions have been built. I have not yet done that for the Pi3, but it is easy to do if there is interest. let me know if you want a language-specific build for the Pi3.

..yep, just 337.4MB, yet contains just about every app that you will ever want, including LibreOffice, Scribus, Inkscape, Gimp, GParted, Dia, Symphytum, HomeBank, Planner, Grisbi, Osmo, NoteCase, Pidgin, Xine, Audacious -- the list goes on.

If you don't know how to write the image file to a micro SD card, see the link below. Please, please, do use a Class 10 (or faster) SD card, otherwise performance will be noticeably degraded. At least 2GB, but I recommend 8GB or greater to have sufficient room for ongoing usage.

Usage notes

Startup of some apps is slow, SeaMonkey for example. The first time that you get the desktop, the Quick Setup window will display -- tick the checkbox to 'Recompress easy.sfs from xz to gz'. File easy.sfs has all of Easy and it is xz-compressed for a smaller download. On a PC it is not noticeable, but on the Pi3 app-startup is noticeably slow, compared with gz compression. So, that is one improvement that you can make.

Also in Quick Setup, you will see a 'Set time and date from Internet' checkbox. Definitely tick that, as the Pi does not have its own battery-powered clock. It really does stuff things up if the Pi thinks the date is January 1970!

If an ethernet cable is plugged in, there should be automatic connection to the Internet. If you plug in the cable after bootup, wait awhile, the automatic detection may need a minute or two to pickup the new connection. Habits apps. Easy 1.0.x is using NetworkManager and ModemManager, but right-click on the 'connect' icon on the desktop and choose 'Execute the Internet Connection Wizard' to use the older network connection utilities.

I do wish the Pi had 2GB RAM! But, we have to live with what we have. My Rock64 board has 4GB RAM, and performance is noticeably snappier. Liquibid video improve 2 7 18. Video plays better too. However, you should still find EasyOS on the Pi3 to be a pleasant experience.
